What is wrong with cheating on homework and tests?

Why are students not allowed to collaborate on homework and tests? Many of the questions asked could be simply googled. It is not fair and inconsistent with today’s reality where adults simply look up answers. If you ask me, it sounds like teachers are training us to be mind-numbing dumb robots instead of successful individuals where the ends justifies the means!

So, actually learning things makes us mind-numbing dumb robots, but cheating or looking things up online makes us successful individuals? Hm. It doesn’t sound like cheating did your reasoning skills a whole lot of good…

The ends do not always justify the means.

Successful individuals are people who have many qualities, none of which you seem to realize, based on your question and reasoning.

One of those things is recognizing an easy solution, which you seem to think cheating is. An easier solution would be studying. You get the feeling of accomplishment, don’t have to continue cheating to remember the material, actually understand it, and you don’t have to worry if the other person knew what they were talking about.

Something else that successful individuals have is a sense of self, and a sense of ethics. If you copy someone else’s work, you get the same grade they did without doing any of the work. They might have worked for days, weeks, even months on homework, and all you did was rephrase it in probably five minutes. This not only represents you as lazy and a poor sense of a character, but it also throws the work that the other person spent so much time on into the dust. What you want to do is make people fail, or even make them feel worthless because you have no care for what they spent on that work.

Adults do, occasionally, look up answers. However, you must recognize that they must have some prerequisite knowledge to do so. In order to find said answers, they have to know exactly where to look, what it will be under, what is trustworthy.

Cheating is simply unethical. If you ask me, it makes you out to be lazy, cruel, and from the way you phrased it, just wanting an easy out.

All of your reasoning just leads me to think you are immature, because you push all of the blame for cheating onto teachers.

Look at it this way. Although it’s probably true that in an age of calculators and computers there’s no overriding reason to know how to do long division (much less extract a square root) manually, there are some areas where only the actual hands-on experience equips you with a skill you’ll need for the rest of your life. Just as you don’t learn how to swim by googling “swim,” you can’t become proficient in writing or speaking the English language by simply downloading a text from the Internet and submitting it as your own. The same goes for learning a foreign language; it takes hours, months, even years of practice — the more the better. The same principle holds for many other disciplines. Funny, most people have no problem with the concept that the only way to become an athlete is through constant practice and devoting a lot of hard work to the endeavor. Why then do we so often feel differently about mental effort?

There are certain basics that everyone should know- how to read, how to think through problems, how to do basic math, how the physical world works, how governments work, etc. These are general information and skills that you cannot learn by cheating. Learning the basics is not being trained to be “mind-numbing robots.” On the contrary, it prevents you from being a dull person.

Yes, adults do look up things on the Internet and in dictionaries, etc. However, educated adults can take care of their daily lives, read a newpaper and understand it, have an intelligent conversation without embarrassing themselves, etc. without googling anything. They can do this because they learned the necessary skills and general information in school.

You should always do your own work because if you don’t, you won’t refine the skills necessary to make you a thinker. Thinking skills will get you where you want to go in life. Believe it or not, a lot of the information on the Internet is garbage. If you’re not a thinker, how do you figure out what’s garbage and what’s not?

Whew! I don’t know what your age is, but, believe me, it’s not appropriate to expect to get through life cheating. For example, people go to jail and/or pay fines for cheating on taxes. You mention here that you feel “adults simply look up answers.” No, the mature adult knows that not everything they read can be trusted, for one thing. This is the problem with today’s technology and one that bothers adults everywhere. Kids today know how to find a lot of information. What they don’t always know is how to sift through it; what they can trust as fact and what they can’t. You also mention “mind-numbing robots.” I’ll tell you an example of how technology has created a mind-numbing robot. I once worked for a pharmacy services company that could not, for the longest time, figure out why a certain gentleman could not get his medication at his drug store. The so-called “system” kicked out his request as unfillable, even though he was at his drugstore on the day of the month his prescription should have been refillable. Well, guess what they discovered after hours and hours of effort in tracking down the problem!? He had gone into the drugstore 15 minutes before the time that would have been exACTLY 30 days after his last refill. Now, THAT’S mind-numbing…because a machine is not a human being who can use its common sense, this man could not refill his prescription. This whole snafu caused a lot of frustration, hard feelings, and way too much time spent on a problem. There’s a perfect example of how technology is not the be-all and end-all of our world. I bring this to your attention because it is technology that has, in part, birthed a whole new realm of cheating. Kids can download papers, find what they THINK is the answer to problems, and are encouraged to do these kinds of things, instead of putting in the elbow grease it takes to do the work themselves. Incidentally, I worry about you if you truly believe “the ends justifies the means.” I wouldn’t want you working for me, and neither would any decent employer. Remember, you have to live with yourself, you have to look at yourself every day in the mirror-why not give yourself to achieve something totally of your own accord, and NOT through the various means of cheating that are available to you. Remember, a person of character is one who does the right thing when no one is watching.

What is wrong with cheating? It is unethical. You wouldn’t want others to take credit for work that you have done. But you’re not really asking that.

Collaborating to find the right answer is something that teacher’s should do more of. Thinking in teams is something that should be taught at all age levels. Working together to solve problems is the wave of the future and I, as a teacher see the need for more collaboration and for better computer programs in the classroom.

I can also see the other side of the coin though and tell you that those mind numbing facts that you are learning in school help to increase your knowledge of the world around you. The more facts that you learn the more recognizable you will become to others around you. This recognition is seen in grades and higher grades increase the chance you’ll be chosen to get a scholarship and accepted to the college of your choice. So take heart, and don’t let the facts get you down just think of it as one more step to attaining my personal goals.

Copying/collaborating on homework helps you finish quicker. But, it does not make you smarter.

Tests are primarily used to determine your knowledge on a certain topic. The results enable the teacher to know what material should be remediated.

When I was in high school, there were several students who would copy from each other and me. I would write incorrect answers for every question. When they turned in their papers, I would change my answers. They did it all year and never figured it out.

Consider this: In the “real” world, copying can have some very negative and harsh consequences. If you are caught doing it in college, you will be placed on academic probation and possibly expelled. NO REFUND. So, you just wasted your tuition.

Outside of college: You can face fines up to $250,000.00 and 5 years in prison. I was student teaching at a school that got busted for having more copies than were authorized by the copyright agreement. Since it was a first offense, they were let off with a $10,000.00 fine.

I had it happen to me. I teach and write music at two schools.

The other day I noticed some new music that one of my partners had purchased for the drumline (I teach his drumline).

I looked through the cadence music and noticed one that I had written and taught at another school.

Since this involves a music publishing company, I am going for the maximum penalty for $250,000.00 and 10 years because as a publishing business they are supposed to know the various laws of copyright infringement. And, I already know that if I copied and marketed their music, they would go after me as well.

A lot of tests for older students should be application tests where the students need to know the basic information in order to answer higher level thinking questions. I don’t mind collaboration in learning, but the final assessment should be an individual thing.

Cheating is wrong because it causes a loss of integrity. If you are willing to cheat on homework what else will you cheat on? It will only get worse as you grow older and then what? But beyond the moral issue, it raises concern as to what you are personally sacrifricing as well. It is rewarding to learn about new things and confirm what you know by doing on your own. No help from others, you are now validating in your own knowledge. It is a wonderful feeling to know that you have the answer to something without looking to someone else to give it to you. Moreover, you will really remember the answer if you researched it yourself and didn’t get the answers handed to you.

The people we read about everyday in the news that have cheated there way along in business are eventually caught, humiliated and charged. So you see the impact of cheating is far reaching in society. Do yourself a favor and do it the right way. I promise you that you’ll never be sorry. Integrity is precious and so is your word and good name.

cheating, in spite of your situation, is often incorrect. Worse nevertheless, by employing cheating, you at the instant are not getting the instruct you a thank you to needless to say want. after all, your instructors think of you’re doing ok. What are you going to do once you get out of highschool? college can’t be from now on handy – in actuality that is plenty harder. in contrast to severe college, the lecturers are not going to take any pity on you, or manage you any in a distinctive way out of your classmates. Are you going to cheat on your SAT/ACT tests too? take in a gap in a school you do not deserve? Cheat your way in spite of the indisputable fact that college and earn a level you do not deserve? relax certain, you will get caught, and then what’s going to you do? Getting kicked out of faculty or college may be the least of your issues. Why could desire to absolutely everyone have confidence something you assert anymore? Why could desire to absolutely everyone have confidence you, much less supply you a activity? You needless to say want help with studying a thank you to be taught, and getting help with your particular desires. bypass on your instructors and get help. end cheating. that is not honest on your classmates, and you’re purely hurting your self.
