What time to buy college books?

Hello,

I am going to a community college in San Diego and I’ve already choosen several classes. The question is: when do you buy books for the classes? Do you buy them ahead of time(I still don’t know what books that I’m gonna need), or do you wait until the professor to tell you what to buy?

Thank you for answering!!!

I teach English at a community college, and I know that I and my colleagues expect our students to have their textbooks on the first day of class, or by the end of the first week at the very latest.

It’s no mystery to find out exactly which books and which editions are required and/or simply recommended by your instructors. We submit that information to the bookstore each semester.

Go to your campus bookstore and have them take you to the section that contains the textbooks for your class and your instructor. It should be very clear exactly what you will need. We never require books and then simply do not use them!

If you wait, you can expect to be behind on your homework, and you should not expect your instructor to give you a break just because you decided to wait.

Good luck, work hard, and have a wonderful time in college!

The bookstore should have a list of the text books for each class but remember there may be several instructors teaching the same class. Make sure you match course/instructor.

Find out the return policy of the book store. Don’t put names or any marks in book until you have confirmation from the professor because sometimes there are mix ups. Or a section may be full and you get switched to another section. You can cut out some long waiting in line by buying early … but there is always the possibility of a class not making … or being switched….. or sometimes they goof on the order and get in the wrong book.

At some colleges, you can check on line with your teachers what books you will need, sometimes they’re posted. If not, check with the school bookstore as to when the lists will be out for the classes you’ve signed up for. Get the books as soon as you can and start going over them before classes start so that you can familiarize yourself with the course material.

Whatever you do, do not wait for the first day of class, you might not get the books you need! Also, check out the used books first, they are usually cheaper.

Im guessing the two books needed to be read before school starts are novels or something else cheap like that(not a textbook), so go ahead and buy those. As for the text books, search on amazon for the books you need and see if you can find international editions in the used part, they are much less expensive versions, usually paperback and almost always the exact same as the hardcover edition as long as they are the same edition

you wait. If you go ahead and get the books, it may turn out that you have bought the wrong book.

Some of my professors did not require you to buy a book , they thought it was a waste of time and money.

Some professors tend to stick with an older book, while other professors of the same course may want you to get the newest edition of the book.

DO NOT BUY THEM AHEAD OF TIME! You have a while to get the books after they tell you what book and what edition.

I would wait after the first week, often times the books that professors tell you to get you don’t really use sometimes!
