What’s the point of a music minor?

Is it for people who just want a background in music? You can’t use if for performing or teaching, right? Local orchestras don’t require degrees, do they? I like music, and I’ve already had 13 years of piano lessons. Will I really gain anything from taking even more lessons and music theory I can teach myself?

I once knew a nurse who also served her church as (volunteer, unpaid) choir director. She was extremely good at both callings.

It’s a way for those who are musically inclined to gain a larger understanding of music in general without devoting their entire collegiate carrer to the study purely of music.

I had many friends in college that were minors while I was a major, and they still had to take a lot of the same classes I did.

Unfortunatley there is little to do with a performance music degree (what I was studying) other than performing in an orchestra. Those who have a minor can still go on to have carrers in other fields (ie, business, medical) while still being able to perform in the small “town” orchestras.
