What is the best way to determine the reading level of a book that does not already indicate it?

I have a lot of elementary level books that I believe are 2nd grade or below. However, most of them were written before the reading level information was added to the back.

Here are the “quick” answers that come to mind…

Many popular books are Accelerated Reader (AR) books. AR establishes a reading level for their books/tests. You can check the reading level online. Just type in the title or author.

Also, you can check a library book vendor web-site. If they carry the book (and they carry a LOT of books) it will list the reading level. Tandem Library Books has a huge, online searchable catalog.

Or.. if you can’t find the reading level anywhere else, you can do a Fry readability test. That takes a little more time, but maybe you could train a parent volunteer to help.

Hope that helps!

There are so many different ways to determine the level of a book that I don’t think you are going to find any one answer to your question. If you look at your newer books that have already been leveled or look at a book from the Scholastic catalog you will see a variety of leveling systems associated with it. You will usually see readability, grade level, and guided reading level. All of these levels are ways to determine what level the book is. Each system could indicate that the book is the first grade or their interpretations could vary and indicate a range of levels. You need to decide which leveling system works best for you, do a little research into the system and see where that book fits. Most importantly, don’t forget that you are a professional teacher (assuming that you are). Use your judgment.

I level all of my text accordingly to Fountas and Pinnell’s Guided Reading system. I find this to be the most up and coming research and most helpful for teachers of all grades and levels. Scholastic is a very proud supporter Guided Reading by Fountas and Pinnell and their site provides a lot of helpful information for understanding how it works. I also recommending purchasing their book, “Guided Reading” for guidance.

Hello
you first read the first page and if there is 5 or more words that are too hard or you cant pronounce then its probably out of your grade level.
