Most school districts in NJ want to see that you actually attended a physical college, not an online school, for a teacher preparation program. The quality of education that you get online is very different than what you can get in an actual classroom, especially when it comes to teacher training classes where implementation & demonstration is key.

I would recommend looking into a state college. In south Jersey, look into Rowan University. If you are in central NJ, than The College of NJ is awesome (I am partial to their program because that is where I got my degree), and Rutgers offers a 5 year program where you will get both your bachelors, masters, and certification. Farther north, William Patterson, Seton Hall, & Farleigh Dickinson have great programs.

The above schools are all well known in & around NJ for their teacher preparation programs, and once in a program they will walk you through the process of getting your state certification.

In NJ, you must have a minimum of a bachelors degree, a cumulative GPA of 2.75, and a passing score on the Praxis to teach. Once you have those out of the way, you are certified to teach anywhere in the state. Once you have an offer of employment from a school district, than you have to go through a background check & fingerprinting.

If there is a school near you with a good curriculum, see if they have online courses as well. This way you have somepace to go when you want to speak with someone about any questions.

If that is not possible, research on the internet the schools that are accredited by the same standards of accreditation as the school you would like to teach in. Also, check for complaints against the school.

Go to a school and speak to the teachers. Some of them are pursuing advanced degrees and they may have some great advice.

Good luck.

I would not use the online process to become a teacher. Checkout the Universities in your area and ask them what is required of you to become a teacher. The online process doesnot put you in front of a class. The curriculums from most of these schools is academic in nature and you really, need to have the practical experience of teaching in a school environment.

Just a little food for thought. Hope that helps

You just cannot learn to be a teacher online. Period.

You’d be wasting both your time and your money.

One or two correspondence classes might be okay, but you need a degree in your field of interest AND the extra credit-hours for your education certification. Further, teaching requires in-class experience, or “student teaching” hours before you can graduate…and you’re not doing that “online” or would you want to try without having real learning experiences from real college professors. So, bag the online idea, and check out your local colleges and universities.

Good luck with your plans!

Univerisity of Pheonix. They are very helpful and the classes are set up to run year round and work at your own pace. You will get a teaching license in Arizona when you graduate but all you have to due is apply for a transfer in NJ. It’s no big deal. Nice choice of profession, good luck!
