What happens to a teacher when their student is missing on a school field trip?

I know. It would be my worst nightmare. But just a thought that came through my head.

What are the consequences for this sort of thing?

It is an accident most of the time. Hopefully some teachers out here (bless ya! even you even have time to read this!!) can send me some info.

thanks dudes and dudettes!

Depends on the circumstances.

Was the teacher negligent? Fired or at least written up.

Was the teacher doing the normal thing to ensure safety? Did the kid break the rules? (A 15 yr. old has different expectations than a five year old child.) Keep the job with or without record.

It does happen. The best thing to do is to be very open with your administrator. Plan well enough to have the least amount of distractions possible. If you are taking parents, assistants, etc. provide them with leadership – even if it’s just them sitting in with the student lecture immediately before you leave. Ask them to do specific tasks – count the number in their group. Be the last one to load the bus – that sort of thing. You do a final headcount.

Any teacher who takes on a field trip should have enough extra help to ensure this wouldn’t happen in the first place. Accident or not, the consequences can be deadly and irreversible. Imagine another Natalie Holloway case…you are responsible for someone’s missing son or daughter and they are never found again (alive) how would you feel? What would you say? “Oh, I’m so sorry, it was an accident?”

There really is no excuse not to keep track at all times on all members of a field trip.

It’s a big issue.

The teacher better have a list of student and count heads 10 times.

If one is missing the driver of the bus should be put in charge and the Teacher should seek security or police help if necessary to find the missing person.

Using the Buddy System can be of help.

Assigning students in pairs or if neccesary triplets and telling the buddy to speak up the moment their pair is missing for more than a few minutes.

It gets reported to the police or just school direction (it all depends if they find the child after a while or don’t find at all).

Than the teacher gets fired

And in case something happens because the child got lost, for example: a animal bit the child, the child felt and broke his-hers arm or simple got traumatized the teacher can also be charged.

If it is your fault, you would be disciplined. Take a union rep.

If the kid is being toxic and a pest-call back to the school, talk to the principal-have the parents called and make a decision. Sometimes the police may be involved.

Count heads often.

Take a list of contact numbers just in case something would happen.

what’s the point
aren’t there supposed to be parents who go along to help with the supervision of the kids?

hopefully one of the adults is paying attention.

i would think it would end in suspension from teaching if the kid was older and termniation if was a little kid.
