Nouns are introduced in First grade in my state. They are not called nouns, they are called naming words. Students are taught a naming word names a person, place or thing. As the year draws to an end, words naming ideas are added. Proper nouns are called special naming words becuase they name special things like a child’s name. As they get older, naming words get thier proper name, nouns.

I would the saxophone or trumpet. If your school has percussion, that is fun too. Don’t give him the flute or clarinet because he might think those are a little too girly. The french horn is what I play, and I’ve learned that you don’t get the melody which isn’t much fun. The trumpet or saxophone usually get the melody in a piece and are fun to play. Percussion is fun too because there are so many different types of percussion instruments to play. I hope that helps!

Where I teach, it is a Stage One outcome, which means the students must learn it in either year 1 or year 2. Usually both.

At my grade school in Illinois, I know the kids are introduced to the term in first grade. They get it every year after that. I teach fourth and many kids still don’t understand what it is.
