What can I do w/ a Masters in Education?

I’m currently a stay at home mom, but I work part time at my son’s preschool. Once he starts school full-time I’m going to get my teaching certificate (for grades EC-4) and Masters in Education (I have an undergrad in marketing). I plan on teaching elementary school for a few years so my son and I can have the same schedule, but eventually I’d like to move out of the classroom. I’d really like to do something like curriculum design or even get my PhD and teach at the college level, but none of the local universities currently offer a PhD program like that…only one designed for superindendents. I’m really interested in child psychology and how children learn, but I’m not especially interested in trying to become a psychologist. Does anyone else had a M.ed? Does this sound like I’m on the right path for what I want to do? What are you doing with your degree? Thanks for any input!

I have my bachelors degree in elementary education and my masters degree in curriculum & instruction. I am a kindergarten teacher currently. I live in NY, and it is required for all teachers to get their masters degree within five years of receiving their teaching license.

With a masters degree, you could move onto the college level. However, you are more likely to secure tenure at a university if you have or are working toward a PhD.

My sister has her bachelors degree in psychology, but she didn’t want to become a psychologist either. So she got her masters degree in couseling and she is now a school counselor.Best wishes for whatever you decide to do!

I have a BA in Library Science, a Masters in Special Ed and a Masters in EL. Ed. I did it for the specific reason that I wanted to teach in elementary. I suppose if you want to be an administrator, you could go for an administrator’s degree. I love the classroom and have no desire to do that.
