What are some good icebreakers for a new class?

They are adults. Nothing too complicated

I have always used the sheet of paper with squares on it for kids and adults as stated above. It really gets people talking to each other. Put things like “hates spaghetti” or “can fly a plane” or “knows a movie star”. Those kinds of things get people laughing.

Or if you don’t like that, try this one.

Some people feel uncomfortable talking about themselves. Maybe you could pair them up, have them get info about each other, then have each introduce the other to the class.

I HATE ICEBREAKERS!!! but the best ice breaker I have ever been forced to participate in went like this… it takes 2 days to do this….

1. have everyone take out a piece of paper and write something about themselves that no one else in the room knows.

2. collect them. warn everyone to keep it a secret.

3. after school type them up on a sheet of paper and make enough copies for each student.

4. pass out the pages the next day and have students wander the class asking “were you bitten by a shark?”

there is an alternate way of doing this in one day:

Do number 1 and 2 from above, then start here:

–rip the writing off of the top of the paper and put them all in a jar [or something that will hold them].

–have each person take one paper out–then everyone walks around the classroom looking for the person their sentence is describing

It was fun because every piece of information has a good story behind it. You can spend the next few days or even weeks learning something new about a different student each day. It surprised me how much my students [and I] looked forward to learning something new about a classmate.

I usually do two things as a corporate trainer I’ve learnt to make an origami bowl so I give everyone a coloured sheet of paper and teach them how to do it. The other thing that I do is I show humorous PowerPoints on safety or funny signs.

No one likes to get up and say who they are and where they are from and I find it puts the participants ill at ease.

You have to remember that teaching to adults is VERY different than teaching to children. Adults bring to the table more experience and generally a willingness to learn.

Make a grid with 16 boxes and in each box put a description, like “has more than 3 kids” or “used to live in another state.” give your class 3 minutes to go around and gather signatures from classmates that fit that description. at the end you can have them share or give a prize to the person with the most signatures.

the grid thing is definitely a cool idea. i did it in elementary school, but i still think it would be fun, especially if you wrote down crazy ones. it loosens people up a lot faster than the whole “name game” thing…

What they did at college was get each of us to stand up and say our names to the class, and why we were interested in the course, and where we were from.

Have everyone introduce themselves and give one strange fact about his or her self.
