last year in my bio II class, when we were learning about forensics, my teacher made a fake crime scene and we all had to solve it (we worked together in groups). she used tape to make a chalk outline and put fake blood on a fake knife made out of aluminum foil and on a sink and she planted a bunch of evidence, then we had to go around the room looking for the evidence (we took pictures of the crime scene first and then we collected the evidence). she used other teachers for things like fingerprints and hair and fibers of the suspects. after we solved it, each group made a powerpoint using the pictures of the crime scene and showing all the evidence and we presented it to the class and told who the murderer was and how we knew. it was pretty easy to solve and kind of stupid, but it was an easy test grade!

When I took a biology class in college, the professor gave us a vague description of a murder scene (“Jane was dead, her glasses were missing, her hair was wet…..”) and so on. We had to write what we think happened prior to Jane’s death and how she died.

We had to look at samples (stomach contents, hair, blood, other stuff) using a microscope – the samples were not labeled so part of the task was to also figure out what we were observing. We also did some other lab work, but I can’t remember exactly what as that class was many years ago.

Have fun with the project, I know I did when I had a similar assignment.

Go to the Court TV website (http://www.courttv.com/forensics_curriculum/about.html). They have a high school forensics curriculum. There are approximately 4 units and each one has a number of activities that will involve your entire class.

Field trip to the morgue…

Solve the mysteries using Crime Scene

Investigation. You will be given a

simulated crime scene and your task is

to figure out “who done it”. DNA

testing, blood tests, foot prints, and

other clues will be taken to the lab for

processing and further investigative

tools will help you unlock the mystery.

If the teacher is too inept to prep his own class, then maybe your parents should have a talk with the principal. It is his job to decide what to teach, how to teach it, and what projects/labs to include.

I think you should dissect corpses, that is my favorite part of the television show.
