Teaching about the Australian government?

I’ll be running a unit on government next term with my grade 5/6 class. Its the first time I’ve taught grade 5/6 and I’ve never taught about government so I’m not sure where to start.

Any pointers or ideas how to teach the various important aspects (or even what those important aspects are!) would be really helpful!

I have a very informative brochure entitled ‘Parliament and the Government’ which I got when I last visited Canberra.

Contact Parliament House, Canberra, ACT 2600 and tell them what you want. They’ll have al kinds of helpful things.

Australia was a colony for prisoners of Britain way back in the day that also pushed out native peoples from the land during colonization (sound familiar?). Therefore, it has a similar government system of Britain and the US – separate “houses” of representation, centralized government, official language is English, etc.

You could have students compare what they know of their own government to Australia’s, understand checks and balances, and the relationship to its “mother” and “sister” countries (like why the flags are similar). Australia also has some provisions on Aborigine representation like the US has for Native American groups.
