NCLB has required increased focus on reading and math. One of the negative impacts has been a necessity to teach test vocabulary, since the state tests use words in the questions which the students rarely encounter in other contexts. While teaching the skills is good, teaching students how to answer some of the types of questions we find on the tests seems a waste of time. As a resource room teacher, I find myself spending more time trying to help students try to at least not be too frustrated by a grade-level test & don’t feel I have as much time to spend on the skills they really need at the level they need them.

No Child Left Behind is the stupidest thing I have ever heard of. My stepmom teaches 5th grade at a rural, low income school and this thing has been nothing but a headache for everyone. The students ARE getting left behind more than ever because of this. They had to cut out things like art, culture that these children will likely not have a chance to experience outside of school. It also leaves behind both special ed students and honors students. They spend the whole year “teaching to the test” so they don’t lose what little money they have. Students with special talents get left behind too. They no longer have art, music or a school newspaper and they are severely cutting back sports. The only one left is basketball when they used to have cheerleading, football, dance, baseball, soccer and track. You can really tell that the people who developed this know little about education.

So much pressure now is on Standard Testing and making sure every single student id ready for the test and will pass the test.Not just pass but make high scores.To me the NO Child Left Behind is actually causing students to be left behind.The goal and focus arent really on the children anymore but those state tests.SO much has to been done in the class that is all about the test that the real teaching is not quite being done like it use to be before this new law.All you hear now is AYP this and AYP that.

This is the best way to give a crappy educations to EVERYBODY!!! The no child left behind is just a very good way to increase the dumbing down of the society so to make it easier to control!!

This thing stop the good students from learning what they can and provide lazy childs an opportunity to remain lazy!! So, this politics is screwing up the very social fabric of your country, and yet too many peoples think it was the best idea… Well those persons, will get which job when they get out of school!! All if not, most jobs that allow retarded workers are gone in the underdevoloped countries, so what remain here… Blue collars… Well thats about it!

I teach special education in a full inclusion school — NCLB may be OK for the general ed students, but does not address the needs of special education. There is no way my kids can take a state test of skills and pass it at grade level. Because most read two grades below, otherwise they wouldn’t have an IEP, it is ridiculous to expect them to read (independently) a grade level test and pass it. Yet they must. Even if they have access to a reader as per their IEP, you cannot read to them on the state test. There needs to be alternate tests for special ed kids to take to show that they are progressing. i agree w/ most things that have been said except the part a/b the reader…all of my special ed kids get their same accommodations on state testing as they do during the year- scribe, reader, etc. i am in ky but this should be nationwide, right?
