Teachers: Do you penalize for poor spelling in grading other subjects?
If my students take a quiz where there are fill in the blank questions, how much penalty is taken off for improper spelling? I have had one colleague suggest that the student get the problem marked incorrect. If we are studying science and the fill in the blank answer is “pseudopod” for example, she suggested that it be marked wrong if it was spelled “sudapod”. I took one point off for poor spelling, but didn’t throw the whole question out. This is for sixth grade by the way. Thanks.

While I think spelling is very important, I realize that some words are harder to spell. I agree with taking off one point for spelling errors. Just make sure the students realize that you are going to do that.

It depends . Was the test for second language learners or native learners. Usually if it is not a spelling test, you shouldn’t remove marks but underline it to indicate that there is a mistake and put the correct spelling above. In the science test however; you should base it on your experience of what the child is tryng to spell. If it is the correct answer, then it should be given, regardless of the spelling otherwise they will lose quite alot of marks. Sometimes it is a good idea to have small science spelling tests so that students can also overcome the difficulty with spelling specific science words as they are not really everyday words we use especially in the word above.

Grammar and spelling should be marked down, but not completely wrong. All teachers teach English if you think about it. How many teachers of history require students to do research reports? They need to grade on organization and conventions, as well as content. Standardized testing has a writing component and spelling and grammar are a part of that. All teachers need to emphasize the importance of correct writing.

I wish I could because I think spelling is important in EVERY subject but we aren’t supposed to.
I correct the grammar and spelling as I grade the paper though and some papers are completely full of corrections but at least they are seeing it done correctly even if I can’t penalize them for it.

Have you ever looked at some of the questions on this site.
I take off for a spelling and grammar. If I can figure out what they are trying to say, I will give part credit.

I think your way is better…it penalizes poor form while rewarding mastery of the subject matter.
