Teacher Dress Code?

Alright, I’m a junior math major about to become a Teacher, and I have my ears pierced. Not incredibly bad, just the lobes. I also wear very small hoops in them as well. I don’t have any tattoos either.

I’ve been reading about the more professional look of teachers, such as slacks and button ups. I would love to be able to do this.

I just want to keep my earrings ๐Ÿ˜€

Any opinions on how difficult it would be to keep those while teaching? I also live in Texas, not moving.

Very easy to keep, I think. As long as you don’t have, like, size 8 gauges or something, it really shouldn’t be a problem. My AP Bio teacher had two earrings, and he certainly didn’t get fired. ๐Ÿ˜›

I am in Texas, too. I think it will depend upon the part of the state you want to teach in as well as the size of the school. A small rural West Texas school might have more of a problem with it than Houston, Dallas or Austin. It doesn’t matter to me, but if your district has a policy against male students wearing earrings, then you may run into a conflict. The students will want to know why YOU can wear them and they can’t.

It does depend on where you want to teach. Some districts or counties have very strict dress codes, while others don’t. The suggestion that you not wear the earrings to the interview sounds like a valid one, just as you wouldn’t want to wear shorts and sandals to an interview even though you are comfortable in those. Teachers are professionals, just like doctors. I used to ask my students if they would be comfortable if their doctor came in looking grubby and unkempt, even though they might like that look themselves. Most of them would then realize that regardless of what we espouse to believe, deep-down, those first impressions make a difference.

Check out the dress codes and see if you can live with them. Trust me… teacher dress codes will be the least of your concerns as a teacher!

Enjoy the ride!

Two, or even three piercings in your ear, is not an indication that you are not a “professional”. Six to eight piercings in each ear, could be an indication to an administrator that you are not a candidate for a teacher in their school system. Yes, you have the “right” to pierce your ears as many times as you want; but, a school administrator has the “right” to not hire you.

I have three in one ear and four in the other (one at the top) and I have never had a problem. I don’t wear huge hoops or gaudy earrings. Most administrations aren’t going to have a problem with piercings as long as you wear jewelry that is tasteful. I think their main concern is finding someone who is qualified for the job.

I would not worry if they are real little.

Don’t wear them on interviews…but once your in wait like a week and they just wear them one random day. See if anyone says anything. If not…no worries. If the principle says something then just act natural and act stupid, like you had no idea. Be like “oh I am so sorry I must have forgotten to take them out this morning before coming to work.”

That should work….then once you have 10 year you can do what you want.

It sounds like you have nothing to worry about. Of course, dress code depends on where you work and how strictly it is enforced depends on who you work for.

I taught 5th grade in Florida and I have a small tattoo around my ankle. I wore capri’s more than a few times and no one ever said anything to me. I wouldn’t be worried about earrings, they are very socially acceptable these days!
