I’m an ESL teacher, and your English communication looks very good to me. I believe that you are receiving grades of “upper intermediate” because ESL tests often ask questions which are very difficult. If you do not qualify for the TOEFL preparation class, will you be able to take additional ESL work and try the test again? If so, then that is your best choice. Take the test, do the best you can, and do not worry too much about the results. If you are admitted into the TOEFL preparation class, then everything is good, but if not, take some additional ESL classes and prepare yourself for the test. If no other ESL classes are available to you, go to a bookstore and ask to look at the TOEFL preparation books. There are many of them, and they give you sample questions for the TOEFL and explain the answers. You can try the test for admission into the TOEFL class again after you have had some practice, or you can sign up to take the TOEFL after you practice by yourself.

I’m not sure where you are located, but they should be teaching you methods of how to teach English to speakers of other languages. You can’t use the same methods you would use with students whose first language is English. So you really just learn a lot about how long it takes to really learn a language, the stages of second language development, and ways to help those students.
