Is there a job out there for which I can use my teaching degree, but not be a teacher?

I can relate. In some states, you can be a reading specialist because you do have so many credentials.

I know a lot of teachers who stopped teaching and became paraprofessionals–sounds crazy. They love education–but did not want the stress of teaching. Since most paraprofessional jobs are designed to give you the hours, benefits and the love of education without all the pressure–it is a great choice for many who want to focus on their family, friends, hobbies, without the stress of teaching.

Actually there are several ways to facilitate your teaching degree. The most common use of a teaching degree outside of a school environment is a corporate/professional trainer. Due to the ability to guide individuals, a career such as this could be used under an education degree, however it may require some specialized learning for the trainer as well. Commonly you would want to be a trainer in a field in which you feel you have strong knowledge and would enjoy. In my experience most trainers make more money than a common school teacher, with the exception of college level instructors.

An education degree may be useful in other areas such as adult education centers, athletic facilities, after school programs, literacy/language programs etc. There are of course other careers that you can pursue, but they won’t facilitate the degree itself, however you may benefit from having a BA/BS which increases pay rate over others doing the same job.

Curriculum development, consultant, or adviser.

Textbook editing.

Or any other job simply requiring a degree without the need of it being job specific.

This opens you up to just about all jobs listed at your local job service centers.

I have been asking myself this same question. After 14 years in the classroom, I am tired and frustrated by things I’m having to deal with. I love the students and the subject I teach…it’s all the other “stuff” that is wearing me out.

Best of luck on your search.

In one district i taught in, the librarians were all credentialed teachers first. My current district uses t.o.s.a.’s (teachers on special assignment). They usually perform a quasi administrative function like heading migrant education, family education center, grant writing,or drug awareness outreach.

Why don’t you try to be researcher or an assistant to one? Occasionally, business schools also look for case writers.
