Substitute teaching before being a real teacher?

I really like subbing when I am teaching what I am going to teach full time. I enjoy teaching and I’m currently getting my degree (one year left) to be a full time teacher. I can hardly wait to be a FULL TIME TEACHER.

However, in many ways I’m tired of some of the things going on as being a substitute. Some of the staff I guess don’t really support sub teachers as professionals.

Here is what really gets me.I have another teacher tell me I’m not strict enough in front of the entire class!! A student asked me where he should go and I said, ask your last teacher since you are not on my role. The teacher basically embarrassed me in front on the entire class by saying, “you need to be more strict”. That’s fine to confront me alone.. I’m still learning and will always learn as being a teacher. However, that was unprofessional to do that in front of the class. They become rather rowdy after that comment.

I think I’m going to tutor instead of sub until student teaching!

You’ll find that a lot of teachers have emotional problems. It’s like a hazard of the job. We spend our lives evaluating and grading, which is all senseless motivators to try to get kids to learn more, but the mindless hours of evaluating everything turns some people into full time judges of everything… and that’s where the emotional problems come in. It’s like a conditional hazard for teachers.

Don’t worry about the other teacher, he or she has no idea what it feels like to walk into something as complex as a school (which can take years to understand the ins and outs) when you know nothing about it and act like the leader. You’ll be fine. And nothing that you do as a substitute reflexes what you’ll be as a teacher- it’s completely different. As a real teacher, you will create your own atmosphere of learning, and you’ll have a discipline technique that will compliment that atmosphere.

All of us teachers have suffered the perils of subbing before landing a full time position. I think what that teacher said was inappropiate, but don’t let it get you down. In a way, this may be a great way to improve some of your skills as a teacher. This is just one more experience that you can addbefore you become a full time teacher. I know subbing stinks but it really is such a great learning experience. You could continue subbing and then tutor on the side.

If you are going to teach, you need thicker skin. Do not let anyone keep you from a job you enjoy. In your most calming, but stern voice request a brief meeting with the teacher that embarrassed you. Tell her you are new to teaching and you are bound to make mistakes, however, you welcome constructive criticism but, please address the mistakes you make away from the students.

there’s a difference between being a “real teacher” and being a “full time teacher”
