Should I teach pre-algebra or chemistry?
Favorite Answer
I AM A MAJOR IN CHEMISTRY(M. S.) AND MATH AND PHYSICS AN MINORS(B.S.).
TEACHING PRE-ALGEBRA WOULD BE A PIECE OF CAKE. BUT IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A CHALLENGE THEN I WOULD PREFER YOU TEACH CHEMISTRY. TEACHING CHEMISTRY CAN BE MADE VERY INTERESTING BY SHOWING SOME GOOD EXPERIMENTS AND THIS WILL CREATE INTEREST IN STUDENTS TO LEARN CHEMISTRY.
OF COURSE, YOU WILL HAVE TO KNOW THE SUBJECT WELL, OTHERWISE YOU WILL GET IN TROUBLE. NOW-A-DAYS ONE OR TWO STUDENT IN CLASS ARE SMARTER THAN AVERAGE TEACHER AND THEY CAN AND WILL CREATE PROBLEMS FOR TEACHER.
SECOND THING YOU SHOULD CONSIDER IS, HOW MUCH TIME YOU WANT FOR PREP BEFORE YOU TEACH IN THE CLASS. THIS WILL BE CONSIDERED BECAUSE YOU DO NOT WANT TO CUT DOWN TIME IN YOUR STUDY OF PHYSICS. STUDYING PHYSICS REQUIRES LOT OF TIME.
SO THE CHOICE IS YOURS.
IN MY OPINION YOU SHOULD START WITH PRE-ALGEBRA FOR A SEMESTER OR TWO AND ONCE YOU KNOW THE CLIMATE / CULTURE OF A PARTICULAR HIGH SCHOOL YOU MAY SWITCH TO CHEMISTRY.
THE CHOICE IS YOURS.
I THINK I MADE IT CLEAR:
” TEACHING CHEMISTRY IS FUN AND CAN BE A REWARDING EXPERIENCE–BUT YOU NEED TO BE PREPARED FOR THE WORST STUDENTS IN THE CLASS.”
GOOD LUCK AND HAVE WONDERFUL TEACHING EXPERIENCE!!!!!!!!!!!!
I HOPE I HELPED YOU.
I would say you are right Pre-Algebra is easier. You have to see what the text they will give you looks like and then ask if you have any bright ideas to help them easy into Algebra.
If not go with Chemistry, you should know that subject, although you have taken math to Caculus, Differential EQuations, etc., right!
