Online class question?

I’m taking two classes this semester online. All the assignments and tests are done online; I don’t have to go to the campus at all. One of the classes is very difficult and so during the tests and quizzes, I rely heavily on my books and notes to get me through. I have an A average in the class so far, but if I didn’t use my books/notes during the tests and quizzes, I’d probably be failing the class.

Nobody said the tests were not open book, but for some reason I almost feel like I’m cheating. What do you think? Would you use your book?

You’re not cheating. Most of my online classes are made more difficult for two reasons: 1) without face to face lecture/contact with the students, profs have more difficulty assessing our progress, 2) it is assumed that tests are open book, as the only way around it is to have the tests taken on campus in the testing centers.

On the other hand, if you have to look up most of the answers, I’d say you don’t really have a handle on the subject. Ask more questions (does your class have a chat or discussion board?) or see if a group of your peers would be willing to set up an online study group. Make sure your notes are well written and organized so that you can study just from the notes.

I would use my book if it were permissible. Ask your instructor if the class is open book/open notes. If it isn’t, then stop using them and you won’t feel guilty anymore.

Unless the exam is proctored or it says no notes, use your book/notes. Or ask your prof for clarification.
