Literature guides?

What do you guys think of literature guides, like on amazon.com. I’ve bought one before and only used 3-4 things from it, but I think that they are great for if a substitute is coming. What do you guys think of them? Do you think that they provide quality curriculum?

amanda,

i recently got an account with edhelper.com (it’s 20 bucks for the year) and they have all sorts of literature units on there. so far, for one location it has the MOST litertature units i’ve seen…and if you do the math where you usually pay 8 bucks each for a normal unit, it saves lots of money.

another way to save some money on literature units is to go on amazon and get the title and ISBN number of the book. then go to your local barnes and noble and have them order it to the store. then sign up for your teacher discount card, and you will receive 20% off any books you buy for your classroom.

literature units are helpful with a substitute teacher, especially if you work at a school where subs don’t want to work (lol, that’s me). i missed two days last year and my kids had to be split up and sent to other classes, so i had to make sure they had work to do.

Most literature guides use the same kinds of activities. They just change them to make the relevant to a particular novel. The graphic organizers tend to be the same as well. Therefore, I would buy just one or two of them and adapt them to your particular unit. You can white out the writing on the graphic organizers and add your own, or you can use them as a guide to create your own.

You can find them at most teacher supply stores. My school districts resource centre has some for certain books, as well.

Usually all study guides are simply a substitute for people who do not know how to study. There is nothing in them that you can’t do on your own with some index cards and a little bit of work.
