“Group Dynamics” began in the 1950s when sociologists and psychologists began looking as small groups (3-15ish) in work and play settings. It turns out that small groups is/are a nice window into a variety of things, like leadership, the development of norms, social control, and many other things. Much of the literature past and present on leadership came from the study of group dynamics. The dynamics part comes from the idea that groups are ever changing, and change in regular and predictable ways.

So, group dynamics is the study of small group behavior, and nearly all small groups have some sort of leader. There is a ton of literature on groups and leadership, most of it well worth reading, especially if you want to be a leader.
