I had college professors who cursed in class. Of course, this is a group of adults and is different than elementary/secondary schools. Using profanity is certainly unprofessional and children should not be subject to this type of language. Teachers have to answer to a principal, school board, and the parents. As a parent, I wouldn’t want a teacher cursing my daughter’s kindergarten classroom. If the teacher was cursing, a parent can contact the principal and/or school board. As a teacher, I have never been told not to curse in class. It certainly seems understood that it is unprofessional and not something that should be happening. I would think that a newer teacher’s job might be put in jeopardy if he/she is cursing and there are complaints about it.

It is not acceptable for teachers to curse in class at any level of schooling. I would include college, even though it is all adults professionalism must be kept at all times. I don’t think it says anywhere ‘do not curse’, but it is implied under the professional conduct guidelines within districts or schools.

That being said, teachers are human and are not perfect. Accidents happen. When a curse word slips out, most teachers are mortified and immediately apologize for the slip, ususally telling the principal what happened so he isn’t blindsided when parents call. If a teacher constantly curses in class, then the principal should be taking steps to fix the problem.

I am sure many school districts do have rules against cursing in the classroom, but there is not national law. In the college classroom I would say it’s the same. While I am not a “potty mouth” I have cursed in class before. Like all language, if you consciously choose a word to reach your audience in an appropriate manner without degrading a group of people, curse words can be appropriate. However, more often than not, cursing shows lack of education and other words/phrases can be just as effective.

This probably depends on what level of schooling your referring to (elementary, middle, high). In lower grades, elementary-middle school, teachers cursing is a big deal because parents of younger aged children obviously do not want their kids around that kind of influence. If a teacher in an elementary or middle school curses, they’d probably be subject to punishment if reported. In high school, teachers cursing is very common. Students are use to that environment and wouldn’t bother telling their parents. It’s still frowned upon, but there’s usually not consequences (from my experience). Overall though, I don’t think there’s any serious repercussions for teachers cursing, it’s just frowned upon. They definitely wouldn’t be fired or anything.

When a person feels the need to use foul language its probably because they were not taught manners. In most people’s eyes it shows disrespect for your students as well as yourself. In my own personal life, I have been known to fly off the handle, however I have always tried to keep my tongue in check around students and other teachers. Now & then I have had a bad habit of politely telling folks, ” You need to call someone who cares.”

But as far as a teacher using curse words; it shows a lack of education where the teacher is concerned. This person needs to attend some “Anger Management Classes.”

They may not know but in some states they can be charge with verbal abuse. So if I were you & a teacher cursed in a class that I was attending, I’d report them to the principal, my parents and my minister at church. I’ll bet this teacher would learn to “curb his tongue” after that.

It would depend on the school whether there was a written rule about it, but it’s obviously frowned upon.

I guess it would depend on the school, but I don’t think any teacher should cuss in class. That just lets the kids know you are frustrated and will cause more problems.

When I was in high school I thought if a teacher was confidant enough and socialized enough to say a cuss word now and then in class with us, I took it as they were a better teacher than the ones that acted better than the students, or who thought we were stupid.

Thats severly against the law, its not tolerated. As far as the american teaching association is concerned that type of behavior has a zero tolerance. I was in class and teachers cursed but no one every told so nothing was done about it. I can assure you that if enough people tell it will be looked into and solved
