It does depend on your state and your area. If you have a shortage of math teachers, then you may be better able to find a job with your minor. You do need to get your middle school classes too. I am in Illinois. My minor was Science and around here there is a shortage subject in schools. Unfortunately, I didn’t get my middle school endorsements so the science doesn’t help me a bit in elementary grades. There are a lot of schools around my area looking for middle school (Jr. High) teachers. I’ve applied for a couple and told them I’d be more than happy to get my endorsements if they hire me. It hasn’t helped because I don’t have the endorsements now. Another thing which will give you an upper hand in getting hired is having some special education classes under your belt. If you enter the job market with only an elementary education degree with no special endorsements, expect to be fighting with lots of other teachers looking for jobs. Again, that’s what’s happening in my area and it might be different where you are.

Minors are honestly no big deal in the hiring process in an elementary major because all teachers teach the same curriculum. What could be an asset to you is getting your teaching certification in math for middle school. Most schools have an extension program for minors. Uusually it is only 2-3 courses beyond a minor. Even if you are not sure you want to work in a middle school, it may be a good idea to do because you will be more marketable. Here’s why..you are truly setting yourself apart from the pact. Staff will see you as well rounded and may keep you in mind for future interviews in other schools/positions. You would also have double the interviews because you are essentially certified in two different teaching areas (and you could practice interviewing skills).

It depends on the state you live. Some states actually have too many of one type of teacher and not enough of another. For example, I am currently a 3rd grade teacher in NY and we have way too many elementary teachers. On the other side of the coin, we do not have enough Math, Spanish, and I believe English teachers. Your best option to make yourself more “marketable” is to get two certifications. Again, depending on the state you live in this can be easier for you to get one certificate now and then come back sometime later to get the other one. Look up an additional certification, this will open up many more chances for you to get in that door. If you have any questions, feel free to message me.

Yes, you can teach in an elementary school as well as middle or high school.
