I think your english teacher was giving you this essay to get an introspective of your life. What is it inside of you that tells you that you are doing the right thing or the wrong thing. It could mean a lot of different things. For example: How do you know you are in love? What is it inside of you that triggers the response that you are settled with a decision? Do you get feeling of compliance? What I am thinking is: When you are a little kid you knew you were doing the right/wrong thing by the feeling you got in the pit of your stomach. That might be true with some people. Other people might not get that upset feeling in their stomach. They might get a sense of calm. For example when someone comes to terms with an illness or that they are going to die (if they are terminal). They get a sense of peace.

Let your mind be open to what you think is meant by the question. You might be surprised at what you find out about yourself.
