Can the child get a tutor? Literacy Volunteers of America, I’m sure, has a branch in your area and they have English as a second language program. God Bless!

Try using a book called Teach Your Child To Read in 100 Easy Lessons (SRA).

It has been redone to be a one on one tutoring guide.

The lessons are easy 15 to 20 minute a day phonics’s/Reading lessons, and I found that most children read at second, or third grade level by lesson 70 or 75.

Try Amazon or Barnes and Noble the book is between $15.00 and $20.00.

First of all, make sure that the child wants to learn. He/She must have that bit of motivation to learn for himself. If he/she has this, go the extra step. Spend time going over the material some more. And as much as it sucks, group slower learning people together and have them slowly work through easier books first. Find something that they might actually enjoy. Tutors can also help. Good luck!~

Hrm.. I’m guessing you’re in a foreign country. But, my suggestions are (at no cost) just to slowly teach alphabets(hopefully he already knows)- at that point, i would teach him phonetics. (There’s something you can buy called Hooked on Phonics or something…I remember i used it in 1st grade[I’m in APEnglish now].)

With the phonetics he can kinda spell things out / sound them out. He’ll begin to recognize words( try to link words with pictures).

At that point give him homework of reading a book (children’s books- cat in the hat, green eggs and ham, etc.)

Then, just keep progressing upwards with reading(there’s a system, i think you might be able to find it in google – called the Accelerated Reader system [you’ll be able to find reading levels in there 1 to 12.9] – with 1 being the lowest, and 12 being the highest)

Begin to have him write essays and learn to link his paragraphs and thoughts together- start off with a sort of skeleton essay(a essay is like a burger you have the buns(intro+conclude), lettuce(1st), meat(2nd), cheese(3rd), and a end bun.

Work a lot on essays at that point. This is basically what they teach American kids from 1st – 9th grade.

Make him watch cartoons in English, if you have access to cable in English. Start with the subtitles, then as he progress don’t put any subtitles. Other feasible options are movies. Videogames might work too. I know you are trying to make him read, but sometimes kids need visual stimulations.
