HELP!!! Need help with students learning percentage formula?

I teach part time for 4th grade students that have trouble with math. I’m having a real hard time teaching them to learn to formula to determine percentages WITHOUT a calculator….I’m trying to get them to learn the basics without a calculator – they seem so disinterested – they think their calculator can get them out of everything – I want them to learn by hand – so they can do calculations in their head – or least by hand…..any suggestions for a really easy and interesting formula? Multiplication, division, etc.. Thank you in advance.

You won`t make any progress at all until your pupils are both competent and confident in handling number without a calculator. They need to know their multiplication facts up to at least 10 x 10, and be able to add, subtract and divide simple numbers. Sorry to put a dampener on your enthusiasm, and I hope that you do succeed with them.

Ok, now I think the easiest way for them to learn is this

Say you have the number .5, which is five percent.

For any number just have them move the decimal point over to the right by one and they should have a percentage.

Or you could do it like so

5/20 equals X/100

Then just teach them X!

Some of them will have a hard time grasping it, but then again, teaching percentages to a fourth grade class is a challenge.
