Harry & Rosemary Wong’s “First Days of School” is a bible! Granted every idea doesn’t work for every teacher, but it is a fantastic theory-based return to the best of the best ideas.

Personally, I don’t worship Harry Wong like I have seen a lot of other people doing on this site. People are always referencing the book and recommending that others buy it. His ideas are things I learned back in college through classes I took. And most of his ideas are common sense. They are things a good teacher does anyway. I didn’t need to buy his book to figure these things out. While I agree with a lot of the things he says, I just don’t think they are that original.

As with all teaching techniques, some work will work for you, some will not, regardless of teaching assignment, background of the students, location of the school, etc. The idea is not to be a copy of another teacher; simply find what works for you by borrowing ideas from a variety of teachers and experts.

For me, Wong’s principles of routine and practicing that routine when students forget (as opposed to punishing or ridiculing) struck the right chord and I incorporated into my personal ‘bag of tricks’ for teaching.

Harry Wong has theories on classroom management and student motivation. If you research other theorists, you will find that they have very similar views. Teachers must modify those theories to fit their students’ needs. I know that I have read some of his work and I use mcuh of it. I feel that he presents accurate points correlated with his experience and research.

Some of his ideas are great in theory. Definitely more elementary school focused. I had to take a whole class in college based on that book. I have used a few things, but for the most part it does not work in middle school. To give him credit, though, he has great ideas. I just can’t use all of them. But definitely a book I reread each year.

I am SO with Murry on this one. Most of his techniques are common sense, so they SHOULD work. I like his enthusiasm, which is good for people who are going into teaching, but I don’t think he’s doing anything really new.
