English Teachers— How long did you have to go to school to become an english teacher?

Any tips for someone who has decided this as their future career?

In NJ it is 4 years, a BA in English, plus the teaching major. Some states require a masters in teaching. Check with your local university, or visit your state’s department of education website.

Four years is a minimum time frame. Many English teachers also have a masters degree, which will take a year or two longer. Some have three degrees – English degree, teaching degree, and masters degree.

Teaching English can be a lot of work, more than teaching other subject areas, because there can be a lot of essays to grade. However, if that is what you want to do, it won’t seem like a burden to you.

You may want to think about the type of English you want to teach (ESL, literature, etc.) and whether you want to teach at high school or at college level. The two will be quite different.

Best of luck.

It took me about 4 – 41/2 years and that was with no summer classes. I was a full time student. If you already have a BA in something else then it will take you less time. Think it over though because there is a big difference between teaching ESL and teaching regular English classes and literature. In ESL it isn’t about enjoying literature with the kids it is about helping them to comprehend it. Good luck.

PS I have no regrets, I am in ESL.

It took me three years (including summer and winter courses) to get my BA in English and then 5 years of summer courses to get my MA in Children’s Literature.

I have been teaching middle school English for 8 years and love it. Even though the paper grading can be a bit overwhelming and state testing can drive you bonkers, nothing is more satisfying than a child who is proud of his/her accomplishments.

Best of Luck!

I was able to overlap my B.A. program with the credential program so I finished with a full credential in four years (this would probably be the minimum),though I know others go for an extra year after their BA to finish the credential. It depends on whether or not you finish your B.A. in four years and whether or not you want to get a master’s.

You have to get a Bachelor’s degree… which usually takes four years of college, although it can be done is less if you attend classes in the summer.
