Do they not teach spelling in schools anymore?

Seems quite a few people on here can’t spell worth anything. They use “there” and “their” incorrectly, and I’ve even seen “seize” for “cease.” It’s not like we’re using words like is floccinaucinihilipilification or pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis.

I teach 5th and 6th grade, and we do 20 word spelling lists every week. In addition to that, we cover word strategies including homophones, homonyms, antonyms, synonyms, prefixes, suffixes, etc. All of these strategies help with spelling. As an ESL teacher, I also teach students to look for cognates in their spelling lists – words that are similar to the word in their home language – as a word strategy. I certainly hope you will not find any of the students at my school spelling poorly on the internet.

Sadly, there has been a shift away from teaching phonics in schools. I had very strong phonics instruction, but for about a decade or two, that fizzled out and we were left with very little hope for good spelling. Many progressive ideas in education have lead to teaching via the “whole language approach” and other such “innovative” techniques. Programs such as Johnny-Can-Spell are few and far between in schools today. However, I think there has been a resurgence of them in the last few years.

Boy, I hear you! It is so frustrating to try to decipher some of the jargon you read on Y!A…..I think it stems from the fact that parents don’t expect their children to read books, as well as the lack of spelling requirements in schools. I started reading Louis L’Amour western paperbacks at age seven, and it really expanded my vocabulary and spelling abilities. If parents would start good habits with their children, and if the schools would raise their expectations, you wouldn’t see this sort of thing!

No, not much spelling is taught. In the past, we learned with those “consumable” books, but those are too expensive…the taxpayers don’t want to pay for them, now. There’s a lot of rationalizing that “Kids can use Spell-Check; they don’t need to know how to spell any more” (HA!).

I know, it’s pretty annoying to people who value good spelling.

I think that Spelling is actually taught, but in informal writing I guess some people feel as if they don’t have to have the correct spelling. Or, they are just too lazy to use spellchecker.

At my last school, we stopped spelling in year 7, which was pretty bad. I have changed schools now, and we do spelling as well as grammar. I am lucky enough to have been taught correct grammar by my parents, because it is neglected at most schools.

I give spelling tests every week and yet when my students hand up assignments their spelling deteriorates into ‘txt spk’. The mobile phone has a lot to answer for!

My grandson just completed the fourth grade and he learned 30 spelling words each week. However, when he wrote his compositions his spelling was not necessarily flawless.
