Can I become a teacher in public schools?

I have 27 years experience in the Cabinetry trade, and was wondering if I could teach wood shop in high school with just my experience. Do I need a degree or certificate of some sorts? In California.

Here is a link to the vocational ed credential information – you’ll see at the bottom that carpentry is one of the credentials, there are others you may qualify for also.

To teach you’ll need a credential, this means going through the steps that all credentiled teachers must follow…

credentialing classes, subject matter verification (in your case it looks that work experience covers this) student teaching and finding a job.

Finding a job might be the hard part, but there are not many with your skills set, so in a big district this may be ok.

good luck!

Check CA’s Dept of Education website- you may be able to get an emergency certification based on your experience. While not familiar with the regs there, I predict that you will need to take some classes for your permanent cert. Good luck!

Since every state is different, I agree with the previous writer, call your state’s board of education. I know in NC they don’t always require a bachelor’s degree for those in trade areas. Usually they do want someone with a two year degree and plenty of experience in that area.

You could apply your prior learning toward a degree, but you’d still need a bachelor’s degree and to pass the PRAXIS to earn a teaching certificate. You can do it. Look into accelerated learning programs that have online and night classes.

Im almost positive you will need a teaching certificate…talk to an advisor at a local college/community college.
