authors purpose?

i always thought there was 3 types of authors purpose- to entertain, persuade, and inform.

but my little bros teacher taught him that there are 5 types od authors purpose. what are the oter 2 author purpose’s?

I taught Reading for many years, and I always taught the 3 you listed. Unless there are new branches of persuasion or information. Let us all know when you figure it out!

Don’t ever get caught up in categories.

All categories have a certain level of generality associated with them.

So, for example, “to inform” might be broken up “to alert” (like tornado warning) or “to educate” (to improve understanding of an idea).

“persuade” might be: “to sell a product” or “to sell a candidate” or “to sell an idea.”

In the end, only your ability to reason matters. Not your ability to memorize categories that someone else made up.

But for purposes of a school exam, know the categories πŸ™‚

The teacher or another student would best be able to tell you the missing ones.

I’m having trouble finding 2 other ones, except “teach” connected to “inform” and “convince” with “persuade”.
