As an educator, do you feel the curriculum in the schools should be designed to be more multicultural so that students can learn about all the ethnicities and nationalities that make up such a diverse America in which we can better diffuse the tensions of racism and prejudice in this country?

In NC, multiculturalism is integrated into our social studies curriculum. We teach about different holidays around the world and in the US, how families differ, Hispanic Heritage Month, Important African Americans in History, etc…. I teach all of that just in first grade… plus some. It’s what the teacher makes of it and the importance that he/she places on these topics.

The children in my class are taught up front that everyone in the class is equal, regardless of background and we use this as a opportunity to learn more about one another and the differences that we experience.

However, even though those differences are abundant, we are still friend and appreciate one another as equals.

Well I don’t think it really has to do with learning it in school. Experience builds opinions, and you could talk about the good in cultures until the cows come home, but it doesn’t mean it will teach tolerance.

If you start young, then you might influence them for that time being, but as soon as they are old enough to start hanging out with friends alone, or with other groups of people and form opinions towards a particular group of people, I think it will cause more controversy in the class room. Like questioning you, and possibly end up insulting members of the class room.

It’s a good thought, but most high school’s now a days have cultures and other classes geared towards that as an elective… believe me , no book can teach you better than experience. They only teach you PC stuff in school.

How about parents taking an active role in making sure their kids understand the diversity in America and why they have all come here.

Seems like people expect the schools to do EVERYTHING! What happened to parents, the community and the church…whatever your religion is. Even if you do not have a religion…teaching your children to be decent, loving, fair, etc people regardless of ethnicity.

Ignorance and hate is taught in the home. Parents have the greatest influence…good or bad! Make the parents take a multicultural class.

Yes definitely. Having a multicultural cirriculum can allow students to have a better understanding of different cultures that exist in our country and other countries around the world. I feel that it can make a huge impact on alleviating racism and discrimination. I think that more gradschools are doing this. The gradschool that I am attending strongly emphasizes on diversity.

In my opinion, if you live in such a diverse country, it should be the role of the guardian that teaches their children about the importance of American diversity. It does not help for a school to impose the idea of diversity being important because this type of topic is handed down from the guardian, to the child.

I agree. Since the USA is one of the most

diverse countries in the world. The school should

design a multicultural program so that the students

can learn more about it. The point is that we need

some leaders in future who REALLY knows about diversity.

Only 65% of students attempting to graduate California High Schools can pass an exit exam that is at 9th grade level…. Multi-culturalism is just another feel-good feminine notion that has hijacked our schools, and wasted precious time that could’ve been spent on practical multi-cultural topics: Have you seen Jay Leno ask people where Afghanistan is on a map? They have no idea……Have you ever asked an 11th grader what ribald means? Blank stare…. Let parents teach MC.. Let teachers teach PRACTICAL matters.

They have been given a bypass, and endangered us all merely as a lot. As to those who make excuses for them, or intentionally confuse the concern by pretending there is not any distinction between criminal immigrants (YAY!) or unlawful extraterrestrial beings (BOO!) deserve our contempt besides, and as a Democrat, i detect using the be conscious RACIST to describe people who combat against unlawful extraterrestrial beings to be fairly contemptible. whether, it won’t stand. Constitutional ruling in this grow to be already made so that is uncertain it is going to stand in courtroom.
