I teach K-5, taught 1st grade in summer school, did student teaching in 2nd, and tutored 2-3 in reading. I’m in an urban school with high turnover and low parental involvement. 1st is a tiny step up from Kindergarten. In second grade the students are starting to really get in the groove of being students. In 1st grade, you are still really focused on teaching reading. They should be reading much better in second grade but many are still struggling.

I love teaching these two grades. The kids are still young enough to really idolize the teacher and haven’t gotten ahold of the complete disrespect the older ones have. They really crave structure so, if you give it to them, they will do well. You will still have struggles at times, but give them your expectations and they should do well.

Figure out what college you are going to and talk to one of their counselors. They will tell you the exact curriculum which you will be taking. Request a catalog and look at the courses. There are basic things in the first two years and then your “methods” classes which will teach you how to teach.

I have a Bachelors of Science with a concentration in Science. My science was 21 hours (7 additional courses) on top of my education classes.

Listen to every teacher you encounter, store as much as you can in your brain as to what the experienced teachers are doing. You will find things you definitely want to try and things you will swear to never do, but each encounter will give you more information to grow on.

Good luck and enjoy the ride!

Your pay greatly varies from district to district. I am in a small district and get paid almost 10k less than the larger district about 30 miles away. Urban areas pay a lot more than rural. My mom is a teacher, who works in a large town, her friend does the exact same thing has the exact same experience and education and gets paid 30k more…basically to put up with the behavior problems. I would say average pay starting out is about 30k a year.

I love it. Yes, its a bit hectic sometimes and there are frustrations, but I love what I do. I honestly cant imagin doing anything else.

You need to get a degree in Elementary Education. Check with your college to see what you need to do to get into their education program.

Get some experience with a large group of kids (10 or more) to see if its something you really want to do. I taught dance when I was younger, but if you play a sport or have some sort of talent you can coach or teach that too. Check with places like the YMCA or local schools to see what you can do (I am not sure how old you are…most schools want you to be at least 18).

the salary is higher because it is a lot harder to teach kids.

it’s fun especially when you like children.

you should be patient. kids are not easy to discipline.
