technical document?

Okay, I’m writing a technical document, and I was told by my teacher that I needed to start off with a catchy paragraph.

What in the world does that mean?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

How do I go about writing this?

Think of it this way, one of the most read technical documents is the series “(blank) For Dummies”. It’s catchy because we can all relate to it. Those books are nothing but tech documents written to appeal to a general, non-tech readership. They succeed because they take boring subject matter and make it entertaining.

Catchy means something that will make the reader want to keep reading. Start with an oddball story or talk about something that presents a conflict or a problem.

I learned the “5 grabbers” in newswriting: Start an essay based around one of these for a “catchy paragraph”

Conflict,

Consequence (location)

Timeliness

Prominence (Important people)

Personal (Interesting story realtead to your life)
