The programs range from around $3,000 (Rotary — the cheapest, but one with most obligations and very competitive) to around $11,000, depending upon the program you use and the country you go to.

You can find a complete list of those organizations certified to operate in the US at www.csiet.org, but I also advise you to ask your school counselor because a program is only as good as the local people.

Generally, you need to be between 15 and 18 1/2. THe best year to go is your junior year, because you can work around any missing credits you might have and you also have the fun of your senior year. Different countries have different requirements — for example, France and Switzerland (French) require two years of French. Most other countries do not. Also, some programs/countries have a minimum GPA — usually 2.5-3.0.

I recommend you going to a country with a language other than English. One of the primary benefits of an exchange year is language immersion.

Congratulations on a wonderful idea. An exchange year is a fantastic experience and one that will benefit you for years to come.

My school, NYU, requires a minimum GPA of 2.0 and the costs are heavy. The lowest cost for my school is about 16k a semester that is with tuition, fees, travel estimated expenses, health insurance I believe, room and board, etc.

I know Columbia University has a great study abroad program too. They partner with renowned universities throughout the world, if that is what you’re looking for. I am sure if you go to “mediocre” study abroad college, costs will be less. Nonetheless, good luck
