Good Chinese (Mandarin) University Programs outside of the U.S.?

My boyfriend is applying for a scholarship to learn Mandarin Chinese at a university outside of the U.S. He originally wanted to go to China, but they require that you can pass a test in the national language first, so no dice there!

So basically, we’re looking for any non-U.S. universities in countries that have English as a national language (or English is at least widely spoken), and which also have a strong Mandarin language program. It would also help if the country had a large Asian population, so he can immerse himself in the culture.

We’re looking into Taiwan, Australia, and New Zealand right now. Any suggestions for other countries or universities we should check out?

Both London and Cambridge have good degrees that include Mandarin Chinese. Try the School of African and Oriental Studies (www.soas.ac.uk) in London and look on the Cambridge university web site (www.cam.ac.uk) You would want to Faculty of Oriental Studies. I only know of those two but there may well be other British universities that do Chinese. Look on the UCAS site to find out more. ( www.ucas.ac.uk) The UK has a large Chinese population, though many of them speak Cantonese rather than Mandarin. In Liverpool the Chinese Church has services in both languages.

there are some universities that do not ask for the test, you will have to learn Chinese language first and then go to your subject, you can have a search on http://chinese.cucas.edu.cn/ it’s very easy to use 🙂
