Better time management for studing?

For me, school starts next week, and this year I really do want to get all of my work done and on time. I know I am able to do it well, but I am so easily distracted. Last year when I came home, I would have a snack, but it would end up lasting about half an hour because I would just start reading part of the newspaper or a book. Then I would wander up to my room and get on the computer. The thing is, I just can’t seem to tear myself away from the computer! And finally when I end up doing my homework, usually after dinner, I would be all up into the night working on it, leaving me totally exhausted!

Any suggestions on how to avoid this for next year? Please help!

Teachers will tell you that a homework plan is absolutely necessary. Wrong. I’m also trying to pull myself through the dreaded high school years, am getting almost straight A’s, but have not yet used anything but my conscience to dictate when I carry out my homework. What you’re doing may affect your sleeping pattern terribly, and cause you to work less effectively in class, so the solution is this:

Organise (rather than a plan) a daily routine.

Fit homework into that routine.

A routine will allow you to carry out your daily activities as usual, but will prompt you to instinctively begin doing your homework as second nature. So really what you have to do is (from the beginning of school) decide on an order of daily events from the time you arrive home, to the time you go to bed. Doing this every day will ensure that you routinely carry out your homework.

To make sure you don’t try to over-plan things, you need to realise that what you do cannot be completely perfect, and don’t be too self critical, because you’ll keep revising versions of what you’ve already done until you run out of time to finish it. Sometimes meeting deadlines is much more important than achieving perfection.

Hope this helps.

In your diary or school diary, writ in everything you need to do and colour code it as assignments, due dates, homework or tests/exams. If you don’t complete one of them, cross it out and write it on the next day to complete. Make sure you have a clean workspace to help you enjoy it more too.
