What is the best way to prepare for the ACT?

The first time I took the test i got a 29, but i need to get that score up to at least a 30. I’ve taken every real practice test available, and only have about 3 weeks untill the next test date. Whats the best way to prepare? any good books? online programs? etc..

To get your score up in a hurry, practice the Science section. That is the section most people are weak in, and it is also the section that people show most improvement in. The ACT Science test (as I’m sure you’ve noticed) doesn’t actually test science facts. It tests your ability to read a chart or graph, extrapolate information, etc. So practice with lots and lots of questions from real tests.

Start each practice section by looking at the figures and trying to pick out what information will be important. Identify important relationships between data as you study the charts and graphs. When you practice identifying important info, it becomes easier to find the info when you are asked to on the test.

The first 2-3 questions on any science passage usually deal with simple reading of the figures, just restating presented facts without drawing conclusions. If you are in a time crunch, make sure you have time for these early questions before going back to answer the tougher ones. Better to spend your time on questions you know you can get right than on questions that many people struggle with.

Honestly, most people improve the second time they take the test (I went from a 26 to a 28). With 3 weeks left, your best bet is to take practice tests in your weakest subject. ACT has practice tests on their website, and they’re made to reflect the real test (some of them are actual tests). Barnes and Nobel also has many ACT prep books (most larger bookstores will too).
