As a past tutor, the one best tip I will always give and live by is:

Put yourself in their shoes.

Well, the first thing you need to do is take a survey of the childs interests, so that you can pick books that the child will like!! the boy I was tutoring, for example really liked sports, so I picked a book about Lou Gherig!! So, find out what the child relates to!!

You need to teach the child all of the phonemes. Get some phoneme flash cards from a teacher store and give the child key words for each phoneme!

Forexample, “ch…….chococolate, my favorite” or for “oo….boot and foot, since it makes two different sounds.”

Finally, come up with ways to help the child learn how to comprehend what he or she is reading!! that means ask questions after reading each page! Give assignments like illustrate your favorite scene from the chapter, or character descriptions, maybe even some role playing games will help the child understand character development!! Also review vocabulary words before the reading of the day, so that the child will recognize the word and its context when he or she comes upon it.

Another helpful thing to use if it is a non-fiction book, its easiest, is to make a KWL chart. Let’s say the book is about sharks! there will three columns on the paper for the student to fill in K, W, and L! Before you read the book ask the child to write down everything he or she Knows about sharks in the K column. then ask the child to write down What he or she Wants to learn in the book about sharks in the W column. Finally , have the child read the book and write what he or she Learned in the L column.

Furthermore, Word Walls can also assist with comprehension. For each book, make a portable word wall out of a manila folder and blqnk white papers. Make boxes for each letter of the alphabet and as you discuss the vocabulary words ahead of time, have the child write the word in the corresponding letters box!! Its a great way to help children remember and apply their vocabulary words in the future!! i hope this will help you!!

Perhaps the poor little devil should find someone who can write properly.
