It depends where you’re applying to school – Ivies, etc. then yes it matters. Less selective schools? Then not so much.

Yes, most colleges ignore the writing portion because it’s subjective. The writing is graded by a person’s opinion. Their is no set grading scale so one person could write something very good, but the judge doesn’t like it and gives it terrible scores. It’s not fair to the person so SOME colleges just ignore that section. That doesn’t mean you can skip over it though.

When I first took the SAT, my score was low in the mid 1700s but then I got the sat guide from guideparadise: http://www.guideparadise.com/index.php?option=com_guides&task=buy&id=10 and my score went up to 2190 (800 math, 760 writing, 630 reading). I highly recommend this guide for anyone wishing to get a higher SAT score.

actually, writing isn’t ignored because it was subjective.. it was always available and accepted as a subject test.
however, because it was a brand new section – it was kind of unfair to students to be judged on a section that colleges werent familiar with themselves. everyone needs to get used to the test before it is a determining factor of whether or not you’re going to college.
