SAT essay?

On the SAT writing portion, are you allowed to take examples from fictional novels or plays, such as Shakespeare?

No. Other than two pencils, a calculator, and the exam material, nothing else will be on your desk. No “examples” of writing styles.

Besides, it’s not about what you write. It’s about how you write it. They are looking at your grammar, punctuation, and spelling. They are less interested in subject knowledge–which is why the essay has you write a pro/con essay on a topic such as surveillance cameras at intersections or mandatory driver’s education for teens–and more interested in form.

Good luck on the SATs. I had to take them when I started going to school after leaving the Marine Corps. It was a bit of a shocker for me since I had been out of school for a while, but it wasn’t too bad and I scored well enough to get accepted to some top name schools.

they dont penalise you for using examples, in fact, essays get higher marks if they DO use examples to prove what they are saying.

anyone can answer a question, but if you can answer the question AND prove your answer using a literery example, that makes you look 10 times better. trust me, i got an 11/12 on the writing. i know what i’m talking about.

hope your confusion goes away lol

Yes. It is very encouraged. I took examples from the “Jungle” by Sinclair and “King Arthur”, and I got a 10 for it. So, use examples!

Good luck!
