Memorizing Music.?

I am trying to memorize my marching band music. This is my first year in high school band so I never had to memorize anything. Is there anyway to help memorize 17 sheets of music and fast.

I would just memorize major parts. Don’t pay attention to the small details just yet. They will probably get drilled into your head later. Keep consistent practice. Also, think about the pieces even when you are not practicing, for example while watching tv or eating dinner. This is how I got through my first two years of marching band.

Either singing or speaking anything you are memorizing over and over again can really help you out. I know for myself that’s the only way i can memorize things. For acting, I try and do the scene without a script as soon as possible in order for me to memorize it faster. As far as singing, I listen to a recording of the song I’m singing then learn it a section at a time. After that, I sing the song all the way through slowly in order to kink out the riffs and all that. Finally, just sing the song all day everyday either in your head and out loud. Hope this helps!

Best way is just to keep on playing it. Most of all you need is to build up a little muscle memory. It does help a lot though if you know or at least recognize whats going on else where in the piece. If you have a recording to it, listen to it so you know what it should and needs to sound like.

Just keep on playing and practicing, eventually the tune will get stuck in your head and you’ll start playing it naturally. That’s what I do for piano. For example, I play it 5 times repetitively and I will remember the 1st page or something like that, so just keep on playing!
