Testing For What?

Why are schools so hung up on testing kids? There is nothing wrong with taking an exam but in today’s NYC public schools, they’re testing first graders not only with classroom exams but with state exams.

I would not be surprised if they started testing kindergarden kids, too. I think learning is MORE THAN passing a test.

Schools are concerned with preparing students to pass exams rather than helping them learn academics.

1. The states have to have a way to monitor their schools.

2. Testing is very important in our society. You won’t get into college without taking the SAT or ACT. You have to take the Civil Service Test to get a job with the state. Many professions have to take tests to prove that they are proficient.

Kids might as well get used to testing early, it isn’t going to go away.

Standardized tests have been used for ages and, even tho this system is wrong very often, we still use it because we currently have no other way of evaluating what someone knows.
