I’m sure it’s difficult but I know enough not-so-intelligent lawyers to believe that anyone can do it if they can do it.

Well, I guess that would probably depend on how your particular mind works. There is an incredible amount of knowledge that you are expected to memorize and be able to comprehend well enough to be able to make basic use of it for the essay portion of the exam (or at least I assume every state has that). Thankfully, I’m pretty good at “cramming”, so I did fine on both the bar exams I took (Arizona and Texas). On the other hand, I have no doubt that there are probably some attorneys out there who are much better at actually practicing law than I am, but because of the format of the exam and their test-taking abilities, either didn’t do so well or actually took multiple tries to pass it.
