SATs! How many times should i take it?

okay; as a sophomore, i took the PSAT and got a 195. now i’m a junior, and i want to take the SAT (and the PSAT) in october. (i also want to take it at least two more times after). i might not do so well, because i haven’t done any preparation. i’ll try to read a review book, but i don’t think i’ll have more than like four or five hours a week to devote to studying.

so will having one possibly mediocre SAT score impact my college chances? i know they look at all the scores, but do they take the average? do they only care about the best one? do they appreciate improvement?

Most schools will only look at the highest score that you got in each section. I think most people take the SAT twice. The schools you apply to will see how many times you took the test, so try not to take it more than necessary.

OK, Ironic. I got a 195 also. Three times is perfect. The first time gives you a feel of how you’re doing and what procedures they go through. Just keep taking practice tests because the SAT is all about how well you can handle pressure (especially because you did so well on your PSAT). Just get the official test booklet and do one or two tests a week before your actual test. Then you’ll be fine, as far as the exam.

For public schools, the SAT is a huge deal. A great score will get you in, a mediocre score might be alright, and a terrible score could ruin your chances. They generally take the highest score, but they also look at how many times you took it. If you took it 10 times they’ll start to wonder, so just keep it at 5 or lower. And yes, they definitely see that you’ve improved and it is used to your advantage.

So, in the end, practice. That’s all that matters. You’ll do fine. Good luck on your path to college.
