Is it wrong for me to want to graduate early from school?

Some of my friends think I am wasting by child/teen hood (whatever it`s called) by trying to graduate earlier then eighteen.

Can I really be wasting away? Plz answer if you think you now.

(I want to graduate two years early.)

Why do you want to graduate early? What do you plan on doing at sixteen if you aren’t in high school? You seem to want to graduate early just for the sake of doing it, and that’s not a very good reason.

Remember that you need more than a high school diploma to make your way in the world. Legally, there are a lot of things you won’t be able to do (including getting hired for most jobs) until you are 18. If you go to college, are you comfortable with the idea of always being the youngest person around? Even if you can handle the coursework, you may have a hard time with making friends and dating.

You may be happier changing to a different high school where you’ll have more options and get to meet more people.

If you’re determined to graduate early from something, it’s a better idea to try to graduate from college early by taking AP and college-level courses in high school. You could save thousands and thousands of dollars in college tuition that way, but graduating early from high school is unlikely to do you any real good.

As a teacher, I think you should challenge yourself by excelling in your studies. However, as a Senior teacher I will tell you that Junior and Senior classes are TOTALLY different from freshman and sophomore classes with more discussion and usually more maturity. I suggest you take the college courses- dual enroll- but stay in high school so that your high school has to pay for it… we have that program in FL. That way you are still welcome to participate in graduation, prom, formals, school functions, etc. and even though they may not seem like a big deal… they are always fun to reminisce on later down the road. Memories are made in high school and if it is not a horrible place then I don’t think you need to be in tooo big a rush to leave it. Get the best of both worlds but don’t classify yourself out just yet. Join some activities, take the challenging classes, start looking at scholarships. You really do have the rest of your life to be grown, work 30 years, retire, and then work another 10 years for the insurance! I graduated at 17- had a blast with friends but a rough time with jealous people at my school and then graduated college at 21! I took my time in both places and could have done more to get out sooner but being so young did not help me in getting a job with little experience.

Hope this helps you a bit.

Talk to your guidance counselor I am sure she can share what other students have said about getting out so soon!

I’m assuming you want to start to college early. My son started just as he turned 17. It would have been great if he had developed a chronic illness that went untreated for quite a while. He didn’t know what to look for (maybe because he was young, maybe not), the clinic didn’t probe his natural shyness and he was 700 miles away from Mom. In the end, he graduated, made some friends, and some good experiences, but it was the great experience his dad and I had.

When you go to college, if you’re shy or quiet, make sure you go to a place where they “monitor” you. Despite the cautionary note above, I think it’s a good choice. There are so many options to explore today that having more time to do it makes sense.

By the end of my junior year in high school, I was two credits away from being able to graduate. I could have met that requirement in one semester and graduated half a year early, but I chose not to do so because I was still a seventeen-year-old kid who needed to be at home for a little while longer, and I needed to be in high school a little while longer. I also wanted to create a better educational background for when I did go to college and have to start paying loads of money for every year I was there. See, when I was in high school, I figured that the more college stuff I get done now, the less I’ll have to do in college, and then I can graduate college early and not have to pay as much.

Graduating two years early scarcely gives you adequate time to develop yourself. It also puts you in a legally awkward position for when you do leave high school and aren’t able to do too much of anything because you’re underage.

I agree with your friends. You only live once, and you’re only a kid once. Enjoy it. Enjoy not having the adult responsibilities that you might grow to loathe later on.

I don’t think that it is wrong as long as when you do go to college you aren’t lost I mean you have plans and you’re ready for whatever is right there. I know a lot of people who graduated early because they already knew everything and knew where they were going. You can do whatever you want to do but I would hate for you to graduate if you’re not ready so make sure you are bc this is a really big decision that could affect your life. Don’t do it just bc you’re tired of school and want to rush through everything though.

its not wrong.

i, however, just graduated withe the class of 07 at the age of 18, and i’ve loved every moment of it. i was really involved with the school, and was student body president this past year. its making the most out of the situation at hand that counts.

so either way, you’ll walk down your own path and make your own adventures,

but you only go through high school once. why not give it a try, not just in terms of academics, but extracurriculars and community service as well. 🙂

I’d suggest trying to graduate early if you aren’t happy. But if things are really so bad, maybe you should just try to transfer schools. You could try doing community college in the years after you graduate.

No! It is not wrong to want to graduate early as long as you have the full undestanding of that in which you have been taught. I finished school a year early and have did fine. It gave me the opportunity to start early on my further educational goals and I have a very fine job.

complete waste. Take AP courses in your school and sign up for college institute and internships. The APs and college institute are free for highschoolers but not for college students.
