is 9th grade too early to take the ACT?

If the person is an average student all around, is it too early to take the ACT in 9th grade?

-Also, this is just in general.

No, although it is too early for the SAT as those scores are reported to your later university choices. The ACT score is not. You could take the Plan test if you decide against the ACT. Another option would be to take the ACT sample tests in the test prep books and compute an estimated score. There are some drawbacks to this as you aren’t taking the complete test under a test situation. My son did the prep books but he did one section at a time instead of four sections under a test situation. When he took the actual test, he found out that he nearly dozed off a few hours into it.

I think all students should take the ACT by eighth grade. I had my son take it in sixth grade and I have friends whose children have taken it in fourth and fifth grade.

The reason to do this is that test scores count the same amount as grades and yet people don’t spend as much time learning the material on these tests as they do working for their grades.

You need a baseline report from which to study. My son had a large spread between his verbal scores and his math/science scores. From this, I could determine that he wouldn’t need to study for the math section, but he would need to study for the verbal section. I also had to hire a language arts tutor. Furthermore, I was able to determine that his biggest need for improvement was vocabulary.

I would have to say yes it is too early the ACT is meant for students at the end of their Junior (11th grade) year or sometime in their Senior (12th grade) year. If the student is really interested in taking a test in the format similar to the ACT but geared more towards freshman (10th grade) then the PLAN test done as a sort of pre-test to the ACT would be a good option. As well, the PLAN is significantly less expensive than the ACT, so if you are concerned about the student being overwhelmed by the test and scoring poorly the PLAN is a much more cost effective “dry run” of sorts that the student could pursue.

I took the ACT in the 8th grade. It helps you get a feel for what the test is like and how to take it. Since you can take it multiple times you aren’t stuck with the grade you get.

I would have to say yes simply for the math portion alone. But, if you are confident in yourself, go to your guidance office and see if they have an ACT practice test. Take it and then be the judge on whether or not you want to take the real thing.
