Fall or Spring SAT/ACT?

hi, i’m a junior now and i really want to get into a good university like uc berkeley or ucla. i don’t know whether i should take the fall SAT/ACT or wait till spring. i took the PSAT last year and did better than most of friends but i don’t think my score is that great. i recently took a free SAT practice test and i did horrible. i didn’t study at all (i didn’t know there was an essay so i was surprised) and i was tired and hungry during the test so i had trouble focusing. i don’t know my score yet but i think it did really bad because i checked my answers and i even got a few low level questions wrong.

i don’t want to waste my money but i don’t really want to miss this “opportunity” in case i don’t do that great on the spring tests. what do you think i should do?

Your friend who advised you not to take the PSAT again is in desperate need of advising. The PSAT, in my opinion, should be treated less like a practice exam and more like what it really is, a bona fide test that you only get one shot at, and it’s worth scholarship money! The thing is, you are only eligible for the National Merit Scholarship competition if you take the PSAT as a junior, so why in the world would you not take it this year when this is the year that it actually counts? And no one should ever study for just the PSAT because if you’re studying for the SAT, guess what? You’re automatically studying PSAT material, too, because besides the essay question and length, they’re exactly the same test.

You never want to go into the SAT/ACT cold; you need to study first. It’s good that you took a practice test to see where you stand right now, but you need to put forth an effort if you want to see that number go up. Get some test prep books, and start cracking.

I think that when it comes to your education and your future, you shouldn’t worry so much about wasting money, especially a quantity as small as a testing fee. Study first, but you should take the test as soon as you can. Very few high scorers take the SAT/ACT only once, and you want to give yourself the opportunity to take it again if you have to. I took the SAT 5 times (twice in middle school), and I started in seventh grade. That’s what it took for me to break 2300.

I don’t see why you shouldn’t take the PSAT because it will help you with the SAT and if you do really well you can get a scholarship (which seems possible since you said you did well). On the PSAT you will probably improve, too. So just make sure you study before you take any of the tests, because it won’t be worth it to take a test in the fall if you’re not ready. Also take practice tests because then you will know how to pace yourself and what to expect on test day. Take the fall tests if you think you’re prepared. And if you don’t do well on the spring tests, there’s always the fall of senior year.

Don’t take the SAT/ACT until spring this year (the January test should be the earliest you consider taking it). Meanwhile, go ahead and take the PSAT, and get studying for it NOW! It’s your last chance to have a sort of official SAT practice exam while it still doesn’t matter what you get (since the colleges don’t get to view your PSAT results unless you get a letter of commendation or become a national merit semifinalist, finalist, or scholarship recipient).

Don’t listen to the friend that told you not to take the PSAT now. Just get studying your butt off now (get some SAT prep books to study). Studying for the PSAT will help you achieve your ultimate goal of doing well on the SAT.

My Junior year I took the PSAT in the fall, and I also took it the spring of my sophomore year. Then in the spring of my Junior year I took the SAT’s, and then the fall of this year I will be taking the SAT’s again, and if I’m not happy with my scores I will take it again the spring. I honestly think that you should take the PSAT’s believe it or not they help you get ready for the SAT’s

Take it ASAP! I took it for the 1st time june 7 and it’s my junior year, you shouuld start like your sophmore year so that you can take it more times, the sooner, the better. And you need to see what the colleges you want to go to are looking for. Some prefer the ACT over the SAT, but it varies. And do as many practice ?’s as possible, they really help.

Remember – if you’re ABSOLUTELY not sure about an answer, leave it blank. You don’t lose points for blank answers.

I would suggest taking the SAT twice. Preferably during Fall junior year, and Spring junior year. Sometimes they schedule the SAT later in the fall, and if you have to send off college apps, it becomes an extra hassle to wait for your score, and then you have to send it off separately, etc. (if you choose to take it Fall senior year).

If you take the SAT three times, they average all the scores together. Usually this lowers your score, so it’s highly inadvisable unless you totally bomb one (or both) test(s).

I would buy a SAT prep book. I used one, and my score went up significantly (about a 200pt difference in math, 50pt different in english, and 100pt different in writing).

I took my SAT in the fall and made a 1544. I would recommend taking your SAT first in the fall, then in the spring if you are not happy with your first test results.

This way you have a better chance of making a score that will please not only you, but also the college and university recruiters.

You can take it on fall and retake in the spring if you don’t get the score your hoping for. You can take the best of the two scores and summit that to the colleges.

Good luck.
