AP Chemistry and AP Physics in the same year?

Will I benefit from taking both of these classes next year? Or will I hate myself for making such a bad decision? I’ve already taken a year of regular chemistry and I know the majority of the course matter, but as for physics I’m still learning the basics over the summer.

Or should I just take AP Chem and regular physics next year?

Two things: are you taking AP Physics B or C? and do you know any/have you taken Calculus?

If you’re taking B, you should be fine. It’ll be hard, and a lot of homework, but I think taking Physics with Chemistry will improve your understanding of both. They interrelate in some ways. I thought Chemistry was a lot of fun, personally, but it killed some of my peers, even having taken a year of pre-AP/honors Chemistry the year before. Physics was the same way.

If you’re taking Physics C, make sure you know a bit of Calculus, or are taking some form of Calculus at the same time. The classes are usually taken together at my school, because you need a basis in Calculus for a lot of the material in Physics C. Physics B goes over much of the same stuff, but they do it in a round-about way that doesn’t involve the Calculus.

You seem committed to doing well, if you’re studying physics over the summer, so if you think you can handle the work, then go for it! If nothing else, start out the year with both AP, and see how it goes. There’s nothing wrong with dropping down to the regular physics class a few weeks in if you think it’s going to be too much for you. My physics class had half the number of people we’d started with by the end of the first month. 🙂

Good luck!

You should either just take AP Physics or take AP Chem and regular physics.

Regular chemistry only consists of quarter 1 of AP Chemistry. There’s a lot of new stuff to learn.

Won’t you be taking any other APs? Like history or gov or english?

If the rest of your course load isn’t heavy, go for it, if you have the determination.

I took four AP courses on top of a regularly difficult course load. I didn’t have time to study for AP Chem all year long, I passed the exam with a 3, got a 5 on all my other exams. If you at least study marginally and you have a death grip on regular chem, you could do okay.

AP Chem and AP Physics are the hardest courses at my school, plus I was taking two other AP classes, so I took AP Chem last year with regular physics and now that I have a basis in physics I’m going to take AP Physics this year.

i would take it. i’m guessing that you will be a senior thiscoming year. I would definitely take AP Physics so that you can show an interest in the science curriculum. It’s just if you want to take AP Chemistry. I found it manageable. I would strongly recommend getting some princeton review study guides for either subject as soon as possible. I can tell you that sometimes it will seem like you have plenty of time to do whatever you want, but others it won’t. So for those times that it doesn’t, a study guide can be your best friend by summarizing the material and making it comprehendable so that you don’t have to read your textbook. I would go for both.

AP Chem and AP Physics are both harder AP classes, my friend who just graduated got both an AP score of 1 on her AP Chem and a 2 on her AP Physics. She suggests to take something you’re stron at first. although AP Chem is a really hard AP test to take other than AP Cal and AP Human Antamy.

Is AP Chemistry the next course after the first course you’ve successfully completed? Do you have an inordinate amount of time to devote to AP Chemistry and AP Physics? Since both of these courses will require a great deal of time and study, you will have little or no time for anything else should you decide to take both of these courses in the same school year; but I applaud your motivation. WOW!

AP physics is a killer at my school. I took AP chem last year and I got an A+ by sleeping in class and not studying.

Still don’t have AP exam score but 95% chance of 4-5

SAT II chem : 790

AP chem is a joke don’t sweat it.

Wow, that is quite a load. AP chem and AP Physics are both very tough courses. You will have tons of homework and studying. How much of a challenge are you up for? What other activities are you involved in? What are your future goals? If med school, maybe?

I am going to be a senior next year in high school. I am taking both AP Chemistry and AP Physics B next year. Additionally I am also taking AP Statistics and AP Composition. I am planning to go pre med in college so I need a strong background in the sciences ( although I know it is going to be tough next year). I think I will be fine next year. Last year I took AP Calculus AB/BC and AP Biology and did stellar in both classes ( 5 on Calc test and 4 on Bio test). My counselor said that if you are good at math AP Physics wouldn’t be too bad… Compare yourself to me; if you’re similar to me I would take both next year. Colleges love it when students take challenging classes, even if they don’t get all A’s in the classes.
