Any college students out there?

I am about to graduate from college this spring. The only thing that stands in the way is my math class. I only need 1 class to graduate, but since I scored so low on my entrance exam, I have to take several prereqs. Is there any way around this, or can I just sign up for the class I need. Can they legally make me take all those prereqs?

If you do not meet the requirements for a class necessary to graduate.. yeah, they can make you take the pre-reqs.

There might be a few alternatives available to you, depending on your degree program.

1. CLEP credit for the prerequisite courses. If you struggle in math, but are able to get a tutor to help you prepare, you may be able to re-test into the required course.

2. Substitution courses. If the course catalogue for your school does not directly allow for this, you should speak to the Dean of your department, or your Academic advisor about possibly substituting a Logic course for the math requirement. Bachelor of Arts majors especially can frequently take a Logic course as opposed to a math course.

3. Online courses for the pre-reqs. Some schools offer online courses which do not fall within the normal semester schedule. Although this means you would be taking an accelerated version of the pre-requisite courses, it could at least allow you to complete your degree more quickly than otherwise possible.

Overall, your best bet is to speak with an advisor in your department. They have much greater knowlege of the requirements of your University than any of us will, and their job is to help resolve these course conflicts.

If you’re a science major, however, I expect the requirements for mathematics will be much more strict than they would be for an arts major.

They certainly can make you take all those prereqs, though if you can convince the professor you’re able to handle the course they might let you in anyway. I know I begged my way into several classes in college that I didn’t strictly have the prerequisites for; of course, they were all history classes and nothing that really builds on itself as much as math does, but I know people who got professors to let them into science classes.

If your math skills have improved significantly since you took the entrance exam, or if you just did unusually badly on that particular test, maybe you could talk to an advisor and see if you could take the math part of the entrance exam again, just for placement purposes? If it’s been three years since the first time, they might let you.
